Mahashivrati is the Hindu festival in honor of lord shiva which means great night of lord Shiva. The 14th day or waning moon period in the month of Magha is celebrated as Mahashivratri. It marks the remembrance of overcoming darkness and ignorance in life.The celebrations include chanting prayers, fasting, going to pilgrimage and all night prayers or Jaagrans. The night of 13th and 14th day in the month of Magha is considered very auspicious as Shiva is himself a manifestation of auspiciousness. Special prayers are held at temples with day long chanting of Om Namah Shivaya, washing Shiva idol with curd, honey, butter and milk all through the day.
